When former president Wee Kim Wee stepped down from the position. Ong has decided not to run for a second term as president in 1999 partially because of the death of his wife.

Rajaratnam stepped down from position. Ong served as deputy prime minister with former prime minister Goh Chok Tong.

Ong was the Chairman of the People's Action Party from 5 January 1981 to 1 September 1993, after Toh Chin Chye stepped down from the position, and a member of parliament for Kim Keat Single Member Constituency (SMC) from 1991 to 1993.
